In this artist's concept, the descent stage of a Mars Excursion Module is topped by a station module developed originally for Earth orbit applications. The facility would provide living quarters, a medical facility, scientific research laboratories and control center to monitor operations at remote sites. Redundancy in design and maintainability of systems would assure dependable, long life operations.
