HQ Honor Awards Honorees

NASA HQ Movie: Navajo Code Talkers
Date/Time: November 17, noon – 1 p.m.
Location: MIC 7A
Join the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Management Division in screening “Navajo Code Talkers.” This documentary looks at a group of young Navajo men who, as WWII marines, transmitted secret communications on the battlefields of WWII. At a time when America's best cryptographers were falling short, these modest sheepherders and farmers were able to fashion the only unbreakable code in modern military history.  Contact: Judy Phillips, 358-4589

FEHB Open Season Health Fair

Representatives from area Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) insurance carriers will be available to answer your questions about health care options. Human Resources Management Division staff will provide information on accessing Employee Express through the Human Capital Information Environment (HCIE) Workforce Services Portal to make your health benefit selection. Update: 2009-2010 Seasonal Flu Shots
Date/time: Tuesday - Thursday, 1 -3 p.m.
Location: Health Unit
Seasonal flu shots are being offered to civil service employees only, on a first-come, first-serve basis, while supplies last. There are a limited number of doses remaining. Additional doses have been requested, however, it is unlikely additional vaccine will be received. Consequently, the Health Unit will not be offering flu shots to contractors. 2009 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)
Deadline: December 15, 2009
NASA HQ kicked off its annual CFC Campaign (see kickoff event photos) . The electronic 2009 Catalog of Caring is available online. National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month Event

National Fire Prevent Month – October 2009:
It’s time to check your smoke detector batteries. Eleven people die every day in home fires in the U.S. Don't become part of this grim statistic. Prepare a fire escape plan, conduct home fire drills with your family, and check your smoke detectors twice a year. National Disability Awareness Month Movie:

National Disability Awareness Month Observance

The Equal Opportunity and Diversity Management Division invites you to attend a program featuring a motivational presentation by Mr. Ollie Cantos, a member of the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. Mr. Cantos will share best practices as well as his passion, vision, and goal to increase the employment of individuals with disabilities. Telework Preparedness at HQ:  In the event of a significant influenza outbreak in the National Capital Region, NASA HQ will encourage social distancing to minimize the spread of infection. The HQ Information Technology and Communications Division (ITCD) is conducting telework drills for all HQ organizations between September 16 and October 16 to ensure employees can remotely access the HQ network and work from home or an alternate work place.  Telework schedules are being coordinated with each organizations Telework POC. The President’s SAVE Award Contest
Deadline: Wednesday, October 14
Do you have a smart idea for how NASA can trim costs and save taxpayer dollars? Submit your cost-saving initiative to http://www.SaveAward.gov for potential inclusion in the President’s budget. The winner will meet with President Obama at the White House and have his or her savings initiative incorporated into the FY 2011 budget. In addition, the agency with the most participation in the contest will receive an award.

Smartcard PIN Reset Event
Date: September 30  - October 7

NASA HQ will soon migrate to Smartcard.  Instead of using your Agency User ID and password, you will also be able to login to your computer using your smartcard (NASA badge) and PIN (the 6-8 digit code you selected when you first received your smartcard). Pandemic Preparedness: NASA HQ is preparing for the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. A Pandemic Influenza Working Group was created to develop and test plans and procedures significant to a pandemic crisis. Prevention of Sexual Harassment Workshop

2010 Agency Honor Awards Nominations:

The Human Resources Management Division (HRMD) is accepting nominations for the 2009 Agency Honor Awards. These awards are the highest honor given by the Agency which recognizes civil service and contractor employees as individuals and members of a team. All nominations must be submitted in NAAS by the organization's Administrative Awards POC, approved by the Official-In-Charge, and forwarded to the HQ Awards Officer. Walk to Wellness Campaign Across NASA

This 28-day campaign is designed to encourage all NASA employees to
incorporate walking into their daily routine. To participate, register
on the Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth Portal (Unique Identifier is "healthiernasa"). Center specific data will be compiled for centers with 150 or more participants. Sponsored by the Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer. Contact: Fitness Center, 358-0138 or Health Unit, 358-2600.

Workplace Dispute Options: Workplace grievances, misunderstandings, concerns, and/or complaints may arise in the workplace. Employees may pursue resolution if there is a belief he/she has not been treated reasonably and fairly.  Check out the various dispute options on the HQ Operations Web site.

"Warm Up to Giving" Inter-Agency Food Drive
Date/Location: Through August 28, East and West Lobbies
HQ employees are invited to participate in this inter-agency drive to collect non-perishable food items for the Capital Area Food Bank. The food bank serves more than 700 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other service organizations that aid families in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Anti-Harassment Workshops

Attend a lunchtime workshop on anti-harassment and learn about the Agency’s anti-harassment policy, what does and does not constitute harassment, and the procedures for preventing and dealing with it. Seminar on Eldercare: Choices and Dilemmas

Dr. Vicky Balenger, COPE Employment Assistance Program (EAP) counselor, will discuss the possible effects of age-related health conditions on a person's ability to function independently; balancing the need for extra assistance with your aging relative's right to freedom and autonomy; the role of functional assessment in determining the level and type of help needed; and family dynamics in eldercare situations. She also will discuss the EAP's role in assisting employees with aging relatives. Pre-registration is not required. Contact: Vicky Balenger

NASA Day At Six Flags

NASA Day is open to HQ and Goddard employees and their  families and friends. The cost of admission includes a full lunch. Tickets are on sale in the Exchange Store. NCAD Project at HQ: Phase II of the NASA Consolidated Active Directory (NCAD) migration at HQ is underway. NCAD is a single, Agency-wide directory service that enables you to access servers, e-mail, and network resources such as printers. HQ began migrating users to NCAD in February 2009 and will migrate remaining users by early September 2009. New NASA History Publication: "Research in NASA History: A Guide to the NASA History Program," compiled by Steven J. Dick, Stephen J. Garber, and Jane H. Odom, is an updated publication that explains what kinds of resources are available from the NASA History Division at NASA HQ, the Centers, National Archives, and other relevant organizations. NED Replaces X.500 Directory: The NASA Enterprise Directory (NED) is an Agency-wide online employee information directory. It is the primary storage location for all Centers’ directory information and should be considered the most reliable source. NED is replacing the X.500 Directory. Office 2007: Microsoft Office 2007 is being deployed in a phased approach to all ODIN-supported desktop and laptop Windows computers at Headquarters. The Microsoft Office 2007 suite is a major overhaul of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access. Windows users are encouraged to review support documentation and get familiar with the new features and differences prior to the upgrade. NASA HQ employees can watch the televised confirmation hearing for NASA Administrator Nominee Charles F. Bolden, Jr., and Deputy Administrator Nominee Lori Garver in the Auditorium. Doors will open at 2 p.m. NASA TV will provide live coverage of the confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.

Annual Health and Safety Fair: All Headquarters employees are invited to attend the fair on Wednesday, June 24, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the West lobby, Auditorium, Glennan Conference Center, and Multipurpose Room. The fair will offer a range of health and wellness activities -- blood pressure screenings, self defense demonstrations, and stress reduction and massage sessions. It also includes information on safety and emergency preparedness, fire safety, Emergency Notification System (ENS) enrollment, and child safety. Bring a picture (1.5”x1.5”) of a loved one to include in a laminated safety badge. Complete a survey during the event to enter a drawing for prizes. DTV Transition at NASA HQ: When the nation switched from analog to digital television (DTV) broadcasting on June 12, 2009, many commonly viewed channels within NASA HQ moved to a new channel number. These will be different on digital TV's versus analog TV's.  Most TV's (i.e., all newer, digital TV's) will require the channels to be “rescanned” to register and display all possible channels.  Analog (older) TV's will continue to display all the familiar channels after DTV conversion, but channels may be in a different location.  For more information, including the post-DTV Channel Lineup and instructions for rescanning channels, visit the NASA HQ DTV Transition Web page. Take Your Children to Work Day:  The HQ "Take Your Children To Work Day" will be on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. This event, targeted for children ages 7-15, is filled with fun and educational activities! FedTraveler.com Launches at HQ!: The FedTraveler.com Web-based application has arrived at NASA HQ. This agency-wide implementation is part of the eTravel initiative developed in response to the 2002 President’s Management Agenda (PMA). FedTraveler.com replaces the Gelco Travel Manager system. The new system provides travelers with end-to-end travel processing. For questions about training, contact the HQ Travel Office, 358-2301.

HQ Employees Must Have An IdMAX Account:  All NASA HQ users must have an account on the Identity Management and Account Exchange (IdMAX) system. IdMAX is the Agency gateway to the tools necessary to gain access to IT systems, to update your personal information in NASA’s employee information directories, and (for new employees) to obtain a NASA badge.  If you don’t already have an IdMAX account, take 5 minutes now to obtain one.  Follow these instructions: How to obtain an IdMAX account .  Contact: Joan Verbeck, 358-1477.

2009 HQ Honor Awards Call for Nominations: The HQ Honor Awards program was created to recognize HQ civil service and contractor employees and teams who have made exemplary contributions to the HQ mission or to the welfare of HQ employees. Privacy Outreach Awareness Campaign: During April, NASA's Information Technology (IT) Security Training and Awareness Program is kicking off an agency-wide Privacy Outreach Awareness Campaign to raise employee awareness regarding the protection of sensitive information, which includes personally identifiable information (PII), PII incident reporting, and identity theft. NASA civil service and contractor employees have the responsibility to protect all PII collected, maintained, and used by the agency in any form, digital or hard copy. Take Your Children to Work Day: Mark your calendars! Headquarters will be hosting a "Take Your Children To Work Day" on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. This event will take place after the school year has concluded to allow more children to participate without missing a day of school. This event is targeted for children ages 7-15, and promises to be both educational and fun! Online registration and a schedule of events will be available in May. Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report Briefing:  All Headquarters civil service and contractor employees are invited to attend a briefing on the Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report by Dr. Nigel Packham of Johnson Space Center (JSC) on Monday, April 20, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., Auditorium. Packham is currently associate director, Technical in JSC's Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate and served as project manager for the Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Team. Reapply for a Parking Permit or Fare Subsidy Benefits by April 15: Anyone who parks a vehicle, motorcycle, or bicycle in the HQ garage, or who receives any type of fare subsidy such as SmarTrip benefits or travel vouchers is required to reapply once a year. Columbia Café: The Columbia Café located in Room 9G39 is scheduled to reopen for business the week of April 6. The new contractor is The Lundsford Group. Hidden Headquarters: The Stuff You Never Hear About: Learn about the history of NASA Headquarters at a special brown bag session on Tuesday, March 24, at noon, in MIC 5. National Women's History Month: Employees are encouraged to attend National Women's History Month events throughout the area during the month of March. The 2009 theme is "Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet." 2009 Administrative Professional Awards: The Human Resources Management Division is accepting nominations for the 2009 Administrative Professional Awards. The nomination deadline is Monday, March 16. The Administrative Professional Award was created to recognize NASA Headquarters employees in the administrative field who have made exceptional contributions in the past year.  Nominations must be submitted in the NASA Automated Award System by the organization's  Administrative, and forwarded to the HQ Awards Officer, Rhonda Taylor. 2009 Customer Service Awards: The Human Resources Management Division is accepting nominations for the 2009 Customer Service Awards. Nomination deadline is Wednesday, February 18. These awards recognize HQ civil service and contractor employees from the Office of HQ Operations, Logistics (GSFC Code 230), Procurement (GSFC Code 200), and Talent Cultivation Office (GSFC Code 114), for exceptional customer service provided to HQ organizations and staff. Sensitive But Unclassified (SBU) Awareness Training:  All Headquarters civil service and contractor employees are required to complete SBU training in SATERN by February 14, 2009. The HQ Security Office will not be providing classroom sessions. This course is mandatory for civil service and contractor employees with Headquarters badges. Contact: Raymond Patten,  358-2371

Apple Technology Presentation: On Wednesday, February 11, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Room 2K79, Apple representatives will be at NASA HQ to highlight MAC OS X solutions available to the Macintosh, Windows, and Unix communities. There will be a hands-on demonstration/presentation of the iLife 09 suite of productivity products and other software capabilities, as well the latest hardware technologies available. ITCD Services Day: The Information Technology and Communications Division (ITCD) is hosting an awareness event on February 11, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the West Lobby and Auditorium to help familiarize employees with IT and communication services available at HQ. Members of ITCD, supporting contractor staff, and Customer Service Managers will be on hand to discuss services and answer questions regarding training, application development, remote access, desktop backup, printing, multifunction copiers, multimedia, design, and records management. HATS 4.0 Training:   All HATS users, particularly Local Administrators, are encouraged to attend hands-on training on this latest version of HATS.  There are 19 sessions scheduled between January 22 and February 25; morning and afternoon sessions are available. Electrical Work Scheduled in HQ Building: Electrical maintenance work will occur on Saturday, January 24 from approximately 6 a.m - 12 noon. This is not a total power outage, but several sections of the building will be impacted at different times and the same section may have several interruptions. During the actual outage, emergency lights will come on, the elevators will operate on emergency power and restrooms will operate. Contact: Marla Neustadt 358.3741

NASA to Participate In Inaugural Parade: Following swearing-in ceremonies for President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joseph Biden, the STS-126 shuttle crew will join our armed forces and representatives from across the country in the inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue on Tuesday, January 20. The NASA contingent also will include the next-generation lunar rover, which astronauts will use when they return to the moon by 2020.

NASA Update with the Administrator:  Michael Griffin will host a NASA Update on Friday, January 16, at 11 a.m. EST in the NASA HQ auditorium. The program will be broadcast live on NASA TV and can also be viewed on HQ Channels 31 or 33 as well as the Web. Employees will be able to ask questions from HQ and participating field centers. You may also send questions by e-mail to nasaupdate@hq.nasa.gov.

Building Status on January 20, 2009: The NASA Headquarters building will be open on Inauguration Day. Badged individuals accessing the building and garage on this date must follow the standard security procedures for entry. The parking garage will be open for monthly parking pass permit holders.
