NASA Operational Messaging and Directory Service (NOMAD)
NOMAD offers an integrated e-mail, task management, and calendaring solution to Headquarters users and the agency. Users have integrated e-mail, calendar, to-do list, address book, and task features on the desktop via Outlook (for Windows), Entourage (for Macintosh), and IMAPS (for Linux/UNIX). As an alternative to sending attachments via e-mail, SharePoint servers offer file sharing/file management solutions.
Wireless device support is provided by Outlook Mobile Access. The Headquarters user community is also able to get mail anywhere on the Internet without using Dial-Up or Secure Nomadic Access (SNA) services via Outlook Web Access (OWA). For BlackBerry users, a full feature set is available for the Blackberry device making it functional, including calendaring and directory lookup. Finally, Headquarters users are able to securely Instant Message (IM) any other user on the NOMAD system via Windows Messenger on the desktop.
HEMI Conversion to NOMAD
NASA Headquarters has completed the conversion from the Headquarters Enterprise Messaging Initiative (HEMI) system to the NOMAD system. The HEMI implementation at HQ was the original pilot for the new Agency-wide service that became NOMAD. This conversion concludes the HEMI pilot with all HQ users moving into the full production environment of NOMAD. NOMAD currently supports over 40,000 users across all of NASA and will encompass the entire agency when complete.
