The current state-of-the-art in planetary entry, decent, and landing (EDL) systems is derived primarily from a 30 year old technology set developed for the Mars Viking Program, including the heritage spherically blunted conical aeroshell geometry, ablative thermal protection system material, and the supersonic disc-gap-band parachute.

Dr. Lisa Porter, ARMD Associate Adminstrator, will give the 2006 Alfred Gessow Memorial Lecture.
Professor Gessow, a former NASA researcher and administrator, was professor emeritus in the Department
of Aerospace Engineering at UMD and founder of the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center.
+ March 6-9, 2006: 9th Joint FAA/DoD/NASA Conference on Aging Aircraft

ARMD Associate Administrator Dr. Lisa Porter will be the keynote speaker
on Opening Day. Her talk will focus on related work within NASA. The
conference includes technical presentations on best practices and new
concepts for the maintenance of aircraft and the Space Shuttle.
+ January 18-20, 2006: American Helicopter Society Vertical Lift Aircraft Design Conference
San Francisco, CA
Focused on Vertical Lift Aircraft (VLA) design technology, the
conference is held every 5 years with participation from NASA, DoD, U.S.
rotorcraft industry, academia, and international rotorcraft
organizations. Nine papers stemming from NASA's Heavy Lift Rotorcraft
Systems Investigation will be presented at the conference. The papers,
augmenting the final report of the investigation, provide the most
comprehensive body of work available on the analysis of heavy lift
rotorcraft.
