CASE STUDIES
The following case studies of research projects were developed in collaboration with NASA by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Aeronautics (AIAA). The publications are available for order through the AIAA.

Cover of Road to Mach 10: Lessons Learned from the X-43A Flight Research Program
+ Road to Mach 10: Lessons Learned from the X-43A Flight Research Program
This first, full-length history of the X-43 project, which achieved the first in-flight testing of a scramjet engine, illustrates how groundbreaking technology unfolds. It details the development of the scramjet over the last half-century, providing the reader with an understanding of how external factors influence a new technology. Published in 2008.
Cover of book entitled From Archangel to Senior Crown: Design and Development of the Blackbird
+ From Archangel to Senior Crown: Design and Development of the Blackbird
NASA historian Peter Merlin addresses the Lockheed Blackbirds (the A-12, YF-12, M-21, D-21, and SR-71) and NASA's role in using the aircraft as a flying laboratory to collect data on materials, structures, loads, heating, aerodynamics and performance for high-speed aircraft. Published in 2008.
The following publication is viewable on-line or available for order through NASA's Center for Aerospace Information (CASI).

  Cover of X-15 book
+ X-15: Extending the Frontiers of Flight
This history of the design and achievements of the high-speed, 1950s-era X-15 airplane includes selected biographies, flight logs and physical characteristics of the airplane. An excerpt from the book's back jacket: "Neil Armstrong, amongst others, has called the X-15 'the most successful research airplane in history.' That might be stretching a point, but it was certainly the most successful of the highspeed X-planes." Published in 2007.
