"Environmental issues are likely to impose the fundamental limitation on air transportation growth in the 21st century."

NASA has recognized that concern in its strategic planning and included these enabling technology goals in its "Aeronautics & Space Transportation Technology: Three Pillars for Success:"

  • "Reduce emissions of future aircraft by a factor of three within 10 years, and by a factor of five within 20 years."
  • "Reduce the perceived noise levels of future aircraft by a factor of two from today's subsonic aircraft within 10 years, and by a factor of four within 20 years."

The Environmental Compatibility Assessment (ECoA) Core Team has been directed by the Executive Council of the NASA ARMD & Space Transportation Technology to assess the ability of current programs to achieve these goals and to determine what additional effort may be required (i.e., a "gap" analysis).

In response, the ECOA Core Team has adopted a vision that:

In collaboration with carriers, manufacturers, academia and other government agencies, NASA will develop robust technology options which ensure that environmental issues do not constrain the growth of air transportation.

The Team's efforts will begin with a number of outreach activities which seek to address environmental concerns of NASA's various customers and stakeholders. With their help, the assessment and resulting recommendations are expected to be completed in July 1998.
