This model represents an early example of a wind-tunnel model.
Handcrafted from mahogany, it is shaped to represent the aerodynamic
lines of the Boeing F4B-2. The model details include adjustable control
surfaces on the vertical and horizontal tails and wings. Additionally
the details of the pilot's face are modeled. This model was used to
study the spin characteristic of the F4B-2 that was in use by the U.S.
Navy and had displayed dangerous spinning characteristics. NACA and the
U.S. Navy worked together on different tail configurations to provide
solutions. Results from the study of this specific model were then
flight-tested in 1934.
