Early X-15 Concept Model , ca 1953.

Lent by Langley Research Center

An early steel wind tunnel model of the proposed high-speed research vehicle that was later to be named the X-15. It was tested in the 1953 time frame within the NACA Langley wind tunnels, at subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic speeds. The aim of these tests was to determine the proposed vehicles configuration and ascertain how it would fly over its proposed speed range. Different wing and tail configurations were tested during this period. This model has diamond shaped airfoils on the X configuration tail. The wedge tail concept for high-speed flight was an outcome of this testing.
