North American XB-70 sonic boom model, early 1960's.

Lent by Langley Research Center

This extremely small model of the XB-70, about the length of your thumb, was tested at Mach 3.8 in order to determine the sonic boom signature of the aircraft. In the early 1960s the United States was beginning to look into the feasibility of a supersonic transport, and sonic booms were a main concern. The tests this model were used in were designed to understand the physical aspects of sonic boom propagation from a wind tunnel model and compare this data to actual flight data. These tests resulted in improved understanding of sonic booms, improved testing techniques and improvements in the design of supersonic vehicles.
