Oil flow patterns on wedge shapes, ca. 1980.

Lent by Langley Research Center

A series of wedge shapes were tested at hypersonic speed of Mach 6 to 6.9 to investigate leeward side vortex generation. The white patterns on the different wedge shapes give a visual interpretation of surface flows, which help identify flow problem areas and show the airflow around them. As air bends around a body it creates swirling patterns, or vortices, which change the way in which a vehicle flies through the air. The white patterns are made using white oil and paint mixture, which initially painted on the model, is blown around the model by the airflow. The mixture is blown from the high-pressure areas and collects in the low-pressure areas.
