Modified Bell X-1 Spin-Tunnel Model, C. 1 950

Lent by Langley Research Center

This is one of several fan blades used at the Langley Seven x Ten Foot High Speed Wind Tunnel. Each fan blade is hand crafted of laminated sheets of Sitka spruce that are then properly shaped much like a propeller blade to achieve the necessary airflow through the wind tunnel. Sitka spruce was used because of extremely high strength to weight ratio (higher than steel) and is easily glued and shaped. The Sitka spruce grows to an average height of between 180 to 260 feet and has an estimated average life span of 700 to 800 years. Sitka spruce grows only along the Pacific coast near sea level. This blade generated airflow of just over 600miles per hour.
