Cross-Section of 40x80 Foot Wind Tunnel Fan Blade, CA. 1950

Lent by Ames Research Center

This cross section is from the Forty by Eighty Foot Full-Scale Wind Tunnel fan blade which shows the airfoil shape of the blade. These blades are made of spruce wood laminated together then hand shaped to give the desired airfoil shapes or contours. The process to construct these blades has not really changed in over seventy years. The wood laminates are oriented to obtain strength and to sustain the loads experienced moving the air around the wind tunnel at speeds in excess of 300 miles per hour.
