Hypersonic skip-glide model, 1960's.

Lent by Langley Research Center

The Hypersonic skip-glide concept was designed to go outside the atmosphere and enter back through it, rotating or skipping off the boundary or edge of the atmosphere. By changing it's angle of attack the vehicle could bank, causing it to climb, gliding until it would skip off the atmosphere again. The Concept was wind tunnel tested in the 1960's, but never reached the flight test phase. This vehicle had the highest lift to drag ratio at hypersonic speeds of the time.
