Redstone Ballistic Missile model, ca. 1957.

Lent by Marshall Space Flight Center

The construction of this model was stopped halfway through, thus it provides a good illustration of the process of pressure model manufacturing. The steel tubing that connects the pressure taps on the model's exterior surface runs through the model into the attached structure. The model, of stainless steel, was manufactured by the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in the late 1950's, though the Redstone missile itself (the creation of Wernher von Braun and his team) dates from 1953. The missile was also used as the USA's first space launcher: it was used to launch the first American satellite, Explorer I (January 31, 1958), and the first manned Mercury capsule (May 5, 1961, with astronaut Alan Shepard).
