Vought F-8 Crusader Super Critical Wing Research Model, ca. 1968.

Lent by Langley Research Center

This model is a modified Vought F-8 Crusader used for super critical wing research. This model displays several of the concepts used to achieve supersonic speeds. These concepts of the Area Rule and the Super Critical Airfoil were both developed at NASA by Richard Whitcomb. This model was specifically used to study the super critical wing at speeds near Mach 1. The marking on this model represent reference measurements to determine the cross sectional area and model volume. In recognition of his work on the area rule Richard Whitcomb would be awarded the prestigious Collier Trophy in 1954.
