Wind tunnel model molds, 1980s.

Lent by Ames Research Center

These molds for a .0939 scale Vertical-Short Takeoff and Landing (VSTOL) wind tunnel model were used to reduce the time required to manufacture wind tunnel models. The concept of using molds to form fiberglass for wind tunnel models was tested as compared to traditional machined metal models. It was felt that models could be produced quicker, faster and cheaper using fiberglass than the traditional methods. This proved to partially be the case. Models can be constructed using these methods when the high strength properties of metal are not needed.
