LaRC = NASA Langley Research Center

+ American Helicopter Society (AHS) Technical Fellow Award.
Awarded to Dr. Wayne Johnson (ARC) for his career-based accomplishments toward the goals and objectives of the vertical flight industry.

+ American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Air Breathing Propulsion Award.
Awarded to Anthony Strazisar, Ph.D. (GRC) for pioneering research contributions in the area of gas turbine fluid dynamics, and for advancing compressor technology through development of laser anemometer measurement techniques and compressor stall control strategies.

+ American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Best Paper Awards.
During 2006, the following technical papers were selected by the AIAA as "Best Paper." Authors received a certificate of merit, recognizing technical and scientific excellence.
  • AIAA Air Transportation Systems and Operations.
"Multi-Center Traffic Management Advisor: Operational Test Results," AIAA Paper 2005-7300, by Todd Farley, Steven Landry and Ty Hoang (ARC), Monicarol Nickelson, FAA; Kevin Levin and Dennis Rowe, MITRE Center for Advanced Aviation Systems Development; Jerry Welch, MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

  • AIAA Ground Testing.
"Improvements to the Total Temperature Calibration of the NASA Glenn Icing Research Tunnel," AIAA Paper 2005-4276, by Earnest Arrington, Sierra Lobo Inc., and Jose Gonsalez, (GRC).

  • ASME/Boeing Best Paper (co-sponsored).
"NASA Structural Analysis Report on the American Airlines Flight 587 Accident Local Analysis of the Right Rear Lug," AIAA Paper 2005-2255, by Ivatury Raju, Edward Glaessgen, Brian Mason, Thiagarajan Krishnamurthy, and Carlos Davila (LaRC).
+ American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Fellows.
Dr. Thomas F. Brooks (LaRC), Kevin Petersen (DFRC) and Richard Wlezien (NASA Headquarters). Awarded to AIAA members who have made notable and valuable contributions to aeronautics.

+ American Society of Materials (ASM) Fellow.
Dr. Bradley Lerch (GRC) for outstanding contributions to the understanding of deformation and fatigue of metallic alloys and composites leading to improved materials and models.

+ American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
IGTI CDI Best Paper Award.

Awarded by the Controls, Diagnostics & Instrumentation (CDI) Committee of the International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) to Jonathan S. Litt (GRC) for "An Optimal Orthogonal Decomposition Method for Kalman Filter-Based Turbofan Engine Thrust Estimation" as the best paper at Turbo Expo 2005. The paper presents a new approach for accurately estimating un-measurable engine variables such as thrust, even as the engine deteriorates with use. In addition to providing optimal estimation, the methodology was shown to be potentially useful for diagnostic applications.

Innovative Practice Award.
Awarded to Dr. Suresh Joshi (LaRC) for his excellent sustained contributions in the areas of dynamic systems, measurement, or control in engineering practice. The award is presented bi-annually by the Dynamic Systems and Control Division of ASME.

+ Joint Army/Navy/NASA/Air Force (JANNAF) Interagency Propulsion Committee Outstanding Sustained Contributions and Leadership in Air Breathing Propulsion Award.
Awarded to Dr. Lou Povinelli (GRC) for his sustained contributions to propulsion research, and for his technical expertise and leadership in the development of advanced aircraft propulsion with particular emphasis on his understanding of fluid dynamics and combustion.

+ Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Senior Professional.
Awarded to Dr. Isaiah M. Blankson (GRC) for exceptional long-term accomplishments in managing and conducting research in the areas of hypersonics, aerodynamics, and propulsion. Dr. Blankson also works on millimeter-wave imaging as applied to aviation safety. Rank Award nominations are evaluated by boards of private citizens and approved by the President.

+ R&D 100 Award.
Awarded to the team of Stanley E. Woodard, Qamar Shams, Bryant D. Taylor (LaRC) for a wireless sensor system that does not require a battery or receiver. The Magnetic Field Response Measurement Acquisition System provides an easier and more efficient way to use sensors on aircraft and spacecraft as well as other vehicles.

+ SAE International Cliff Garrett Turbomachinery Engineering Award.
Awarded to John Adamczyk, Ph.D. (GRC) for his outstanding contributions as an authority in the engineering of turbomachinery for on-highway, off-highway, and/or spacecraft and aircraft uses. Dr. Adamczyk will present a lecture and paper at the 2006 Power System Conference in New Orleans.

+ SPIE Rudolph Kingslake Medal and Prize.
Awarded to Dr. Grigory Adamovsky (GRC), along with colleagues from the Alabama A&M University, in recognition of the most noteworthy original paper to appear in the Society's official journal, "Optical Engineering," on the theoretical or experimental aspects of optical engineering. Dr. Adamovsky's paper entitled "Light-driven Actuators Based on Polymer Films" was published in the March 2006 issue.
