GRC = NASA Glenn Research Center
HQ = NASA Headquarters
LaRC = NASA Langley Research Center

+ American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Fellow.
Feri Farassat (LaRC). Awarded to AIAA members who have made notable and valuable contributions to aeronautics.

+ American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Aerospace Software Engineering Award.
Awarded to Dr. Mark Tischler, Dr. Shan-Min Swei, Chad Frost, and Kenny Cheung (ARC) for developing CONDUIT, a revolutionary concept for integrated control system software design, and for achieving its acceptance by the aerospace industry. The award, which is given odd years only, will be presented May 8, 2007, at the AIAA Infotech@Aerospace 2007 Conference and Exhibit in Rohnert Park, California.

+ American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Losey Atmospheric Sciences Award.
Awarded to Dr. Mark Potapczuk (GRC) in recognition of outstanding contributions to the atmospheric sciences as applied to the advancement of aeronautics and astronautics. Dr. Potapczuk was selected for his outstanding contributions to aviation safety through technical expertise and leadership in the development of aircraft icing technology, including knowledge of the fundamentals of ice-accretion physics and the resulting changes in aerodynamics.

+ American Society for Composites (ACS) Fellow.
Dr. Christos Chamis (GRC). Awarded to Chamis for 45 years of research and contributions in the area of metallics and structures.

+ American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Best Paper Award.
Awarded by the ASME Ceramics Committee at ASME Turbo Expo 2007 to Dr. James DiCarlo (GRC) and Mark van Roode of Solar Turbines for their presentation of "Ceramic Composite Development for Gas Turbine Engine Hot Section Components" at Turbo Expo 2006.

+ National Aeronautic Association (NAA) 2007 Robert J. Collier Trophy.
Awarded to researchers at NASA's Ames Research Center and NASA's Langley Research Center for their contributions to a team of public and private sector groups that conceptualized, developed, and oversaw initial implementation of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), the next generation performance-based air-ground, ground-air, and air-air surveillance system.

+ R&D 100 Awards.
  • R&D 100 Award for High Speed Electromechanical Shutter.
Awarded to Dr. Quang-Viet Nguyen (GRC) of the Combustion Branch for the patented high-speed electro-mechanical shutter technology. The technology provides experimental validation of numerical models of combustion using spontaneous Raman scattering measurements in high-pressure flames.

  • R&D 100 Award for Ceramic Coatings.
Awarded to Dr. Dongming Zhu, Dr. Robert A. Miller; and Dr. Narottam P. Bansaland (GRC) for advanced nano-defect cluster thermal environmental barrier coatings developed for Si-based ceramic turbine engine components. The multilayered and multifunctional coating systems were developed by incorporating several revolutionary and patented coating technologies that greatly extended the materials temperature capability, environmental stability, and high heat-flux durability of light-weight Si-based engine components in combustion environments. Application of this technology will enable the use of lighter-weight, higher-temperature-capable, silicon-based monolithic ceramic and composite components in future advanced turbine engines.

+ SAE International Arch T. Colwell Merit Award.
Awarded to Wayne Johnson (ARC), Michael Watts (LaRC), and Gloria Yamauchi (ARC) for co-authoring the paper "NASA Heavy Lift Rotorcraft Systems Investigation." The Arch T. Colwell Award is presented annually to recognize the authors of papers of outstanding technical or professional merit presented at an SAE or SAE section meeting.

+ SAE International Arch T. Colwell Merit Award.
Awarded to Dr. Upender Kaul (ARC) and Dr. Nikunj Oza (ARC) for co-authoring the paper "Machine Learning for Detecting and Locating Damage in a Rotating Gear" (SAE paper 2005-01-3371). The Arch T. Colwell Award is presented annually to recognize the authors of papers of outstanding technical or professional merit presented at an SAE or SAE section meeting.

+ Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) P.M. Ku Award.
Awarded to Dr. Christopher DellaCorte (GRC) for his outstanding and selfless achievement on behalf of STLE. STLE is a technical society representing individuals, companies, and organizations that comprise the tribology and lubrication engineering business sector.
