Irving C. Statler, Ph.D., Information Sharing Initiative Lead Researcher

Recent Data Mining Advances of Aviation Safety Data
Dr. Statler is currently the manager of the project that is establishing
and demonstrating national archives of air carrier flight-recorded data
and of aviation incident reports. Prior to his current assignment, he
was the Level II Lead for the Aviation System Monitoring and Modeling
(ASMM) Project of the NASA Aviation Safety Program from 1999 to its
conclusion in 2005. He was the NASA Project Manager for the Aviation
Performance Measuring System (APMS) research project, a key element of
the ASMM Project, since its inception in 1994. From 1991 to 1994, he was
Chief of the Aerospace Human Factors Research Division at NASA Ames
Research Center. Prior to that, he was Director of the Advisory Group
for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD) to the NATO Military
Committee from 1985 to 1988. From 1970 to 1985, he was Director of the
US Army Aviation Systems Command’s Aeromechanics Laboratory. Dr. Statler
received his Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology in 1956.
He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics, the American Association for the Advancement of Science,
the Royal Aeronautical Society and the German Aerospace Society. He is
the recipient of the Presidential Meritorious Executive Rank, the US
Army Exceptional Civilian Service Medal, the US Air Force Exceptional
Civilian Service Medal, the NATO Military Committee Chairman’s medal,
and he has been awarded the L’Médaille de l’Aéronautique by the French
Ministry of Defense.
