PLANE ON RUNWAY

PROGRAMS
NASA aeronautics research goals are to:
  1. Improve gate-to-gate mobility in the air transportation system
  2. Reduce aircraft noise, emissions, fuel use and overall environmental impact on communities surrounding airports
  3. Maintain or improve safety of aircraft in an increasingly complex system.
The work is organized under four research programs at NASA centers across the country. A fifth program maintains ground and test flight facilities used by NASA researchers, industry and academia.

Research challenges range from the very fundamental, basic questions of how to improve a technology or a way of doing something, to more complex, systems-level questions of how best to integrate those new technologies and operations concepts into the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).
