NASA aeronautics research goals are to:
- Improve gate-to-gate mobility in the air transportation system
- Reduce aircraft noise, emissions, fuel use and overall environmental impact on communities surrounding airports
- Maintain or improve safety of aircraft in an increasingly complex system.
The work is organized under four research programs at NASA centers
across the country. A fifth program maintains ground and test flight
facilities used by NASA researchers, industry and academia.
Research challenges range from the very fundamental, basic questions of
how to improve a technology or a way of doing something, to more
complex, systems-level questions of how best to integrate those new
technologies and operations concepts into the Next Generation Air
Transportation System (NextGen).
