Blended wing body prototype in the Langley Full-Scale Tunnel

TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE: 2002-2003
Better Decisions Surface from Research
A major focus for improving the capacity of transport aircraft operations at and between major airports is to develop new decision support tools that help air traffic controllers, airline dispatchers, and pilots improve air traffic management from gate to gate.

NASA developed Surface Management System (SMS), a decision support tool that helps manage the movements of aircraft on the surface of busy airports. A simulation of SMS was conducted at Future Flight Central at NASA Ames, a facility that offers a 360-degree, full-scale, real-time view of any airport in the world. Controllers from Dallas/Ft. Worth, Memphis, and Norfolk participated, along with representatives from FedEx, UPS, Northwest, United, and American Airlines. SMS was deployed to the Fed Ex Ramp Tower in Memphis in late 2002, and an operational demonstration of SMS was conducted at Memphis in 2003, and continued to be tested at a number of airports.
