Mr. Walt Engelund, NASA Langley Research Center
Advanced Technology Development for Planetary Entry, Descent, and Landing

Mr. Walt Engelund is the Head of Langley’s Exploration Systems Engineering Branch, a group whose charter includes the development of advanced entry, descent, and landing technologies and flight systems for planetary atmospheric flight. He has been at Langley for 20 years, and is an expert in hypersonic aerodynamics, launch vehicles and entry systems. He was responsible for the Mars Pathfinder aerodynamic database, and led the aerodynamic development of the Hyper-X / X-43A hypersonic flight test vehicles. He is the co-investigator on the Mars Entry Air Data System, part of the Mars Entry, Descent, and Landing Instrumentation (MEDLI) project, which will fly on the Mars Science Laboratory, the Agency’s flagship mission to Mars in 2009. Mr. Engelund is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA and the author or co-author of over 50 publications on launch and entry vehicle aerodynamics, systems analysis and hypersonic systems.
