OUR SERVICES
Consultations
CSSC offers consultations in both creative direction and production. In the initial stages of your project, we are available to advise you on the
Communications Materials Review (CMR) System and the NASA style guidelines that need to be fulfilled in order to receive CMR approval. Furthermore, as part of the creative development of your project, we will help you to evaluate your audience and subject matter in order to create a finished product that meets your communication goals. By discussing your project in depth,
this consultation will allow us to develop both the creative strategies and project timelines that will lead to an effective completed product.
Creative Writing
CSSC has professional writers available to create original text for your projects. Our writers will work with you to identify both your target audience and communication goals in order to create copy that is clear, concise, and effective.
|
|
Editing (Three Levels)
Part of your consultation includes determining which of the following levels of editing is appropriate for your project.
- Basic Proofreading: Used when it is imperative that the text be reproduced with no stylistic or grammatical corrections, this level ensures the text on the final product exactly matches the provided text.
- Copyediting: This level ensures the text matches the original while also evaluating for grammar, spelling, consistency, and style. Styles used include Government Printing Office Style (GPO), Chicago, and AP, as well as specific NASA standards.
- Substantive Editing: Our editors will not only provide copyediting, but will also evaluate the overall flow, readability, and organization of the text. This level mainly applies to text-intensive projects such as brochures, educational lithographs, and books. The editors also will provide rewriting suggestions as needed.

Every printing work request is processed according to the following procedures:
- Completed materials are submitted to a customer service representative, who enters the project into the CSSC Database.
- A printing specialist meets with the client in a preproduction meeting to discuss any specific details, potential problems, delivery-related issues, preliminary cost estimates, the NASA/GPO production relationship, and the production process in general.
- The project is matched with a GPO direct deal contract or processed for a one-time competitive bid.
- A final cost estimate is produced.
- The project goes to the printer.
- The production of the project is managed and tracked by a printing specialist and the GPO Compliance Department.
- Final samples are received, inspected and approved by a printing specialist and the client before final delivery is made.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
Preparing Materials
Prior to submission, your project should be vetted through the Communications Materials Review (CMR) System at http://communications.nasa.gov. Established to maintain unifying elements in all NASA-funded communications materials, this process does not include a content review; therefore, data should already be approved for technical and editorial accuracy. After the CMR process has been completed, your project is ready to be submitted to CSSC for design.
Submitting Materials
When you submit your project for processing, please provide all text and graphics along with any specific instructions. A customer service representative can help guide you through the process if needed. To help us meet your deadlines in the most efficient and cost-effective manner, each work request for design should include the following:
- Text/Copy
All text/copy should be created in MS Word and furnished in both electronic and hard-copy versions.
(TIP: Use tabs and hard returns only when necessary.)
- Graphics/Images
Graphics/images should be submitted in .tif or .eps format with a high enough resolution to support the final output of 300 dpi or better. They may be supplied in hard copy; however, electronic copies are preferable. (TIP: Images obtained from Web sites are often low-resolution and are unsuitable for use in printed materials.)
Proofing Materials
Once a proof for a project has been produced, you will be able to review it for content, appearance, and overall quality. Your final approval of a proof will authorize the completion of the work.
