WALTER H. CANTRELL

Mr. Cantrell graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958, with a B.S. Degree in Naval Science. He also received an M.S. Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine and Naval Engineering and a NavEng (Professional Degree) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965. He is a graduate of the Senior Officials in National Security Program at the JFK School of Government at Harvard. He retired from the U.S. Navy in April 1995 with the rank of Rear Admiral.

His career began as a Missile Fire Control Division Officer in USS GALVESTON (CLG-3) in1958-1959. From 1959-1962 he qualified and held every job, except Commanding Officer, in the USS CORPORAL (SS 346). From 1965-1968 he was the Submarine Type Desk and Ship Superintendent at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. In 1971-1972 he served as the Senior Adviser, Vietnamese Logistics Command for the U.S. Naval Support Activity, Saigon, RVN, and from 1972-1974 he was the SSN Program Coordinator in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. From 1974-1976 he was the Repair Officer in USS CANOPUS (AS-34) deployed at Holy Loch, Scotland. In 1976-1977 he was the Project Manager for Attack Submarines for the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair in Newport News, Virginia, and served as the Deputy Supervisor from 1977-1979. In 1979?1980 he was the Commanding Officer at the Engineering Duty Officer School and in 1983-1984 was the Head, TRIDENT Submarine Acquisition Branch in the Strategic Systems Project Office. Several assignments at Naval Sea Systems Command included Assistant Project Manager for SSN 688 Class from 1968-1971, Project Manager TRIDENT Submarine Acquisition from 1980-1984, Deputy Commander for Submarines from 1984-1990, and Vice Commander from 1990-1992. From 1992-1995 he was the Commander, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. In 1995-1996 he was Executive Director, Technology and Systems at Global Associates Limited. From 1996-1997 he was President of Signal Processing Systems Division. From 1997-2001 he was Program Director, Land Level Transfer Facility, Bath Iron Works, responsible for the design and construction of $260M state-of-the-art shipbuilding facility.
