Dr. Olson is the manager of International Space Station (ISS) Operations in the Mission Support Division of the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA) at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Dr. Olson is primarily responsible for safe on-orbit operations of the planned $80B ISS, which include all aspects of risk control for the facility, visiting vehicles, and payloads. He is also responsible for assuring that the proper integration of safety design requirements, safe operating procedures and the associated flight rules are consistent with NASA Headquarters Safety Policy and Risk Management Directives. Dr. Olson is also the NASA HQ OSMA lead for the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) and a Systems Engineering and Integration Lead for the CEV Smart Buyer Design Team. Additionally, he is the deputy for Commercial Space Support, a special programs manager, and the HQ liaison for the Johnson Space Center in Houston, NASA's Human Spaceflight Center of Excellence.

Prior to joining NASA in June 2004, Dr. Olson served as the Chief of the Test, Operations, and Programs Division in the Space Vehicle Operations Directorate at Kirtland AFB NM from June 2003 to 2004; from 1999 to 2003 he held positions as the Flight Commander of Special Projects, Chief of Test-Weapons Test Flight, and Airborne Test Branch Chief, conducting flight tests in the F-15 and F-16 in the 46th Test Wing's Munitions Test Division at Eglin AFB FL; from 1998 to 1999 he was a student at the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB CA; from 1998 to 1999 Dr. Olson completed the French Course and the Russian Aerospace Course at the Defense Language Institute, Presidio of Monterey, CA; from 1996 to 1997 he was responsible for Special Operations flight test on the AC-130 and MC-130 aircraft at Hurlburt Field, FL; from 1995 to 1996 he attended pilot training at Reese AFB, TX; from 1993 to 1995 Dr. Olson worked as a advanced composites engineer and Aircraft Battle Damage Repair (ABDR) engineer on the A-10, F-111, & F-117 at the Air Force Advanced Composites Program Office at McClellan AFB, CA. Dr. Olson continues to serve as a USAF Reserve Officer at the Pentagon in the National Security Space Office where his duties include serving as an inter-agency liaison and expert on space access, industrial base and workforce issues, as well as science and technology applications.

Dr. Olson holds Bachelors of Science degrees in Engineering Sciences and Mechanical Engineering (German minor) from the US Air Force Academy; a Masters degree in Materials Science & Engineering (with research on high temperature composite materials) from the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana; a Masters degree in Aviations Systems (Human Factors and Avionics emphasis, research on Composite Mishap Risk Control) from the University of Tennessee Space Institute; and a Doctorate in Industrial and Systems Engineering (Occupational Safety and Ergonomics major) from Auburn University. His dissertation was entitled "Tactile Display Landing Safety and Precision Improvements for the Space Shuttle." Dr. Olson is also a graduate of the USAF Test Pilot School (Flight Test Engineer Course), the Defense Language Institute, Squadron Officer School, Air Command & Staff College, the Space Professional Development Program, and the Defense Systems Management College Program Management Office Course. Additionally, he attended the Harvard Senior Executive Fellows program in March 2005.

Dr. Olson is married to the former Georgetta Tise of Santa Maria, California. Together, they have two boys, John Tyler, age 4, and Joseph Ryan, age 3. The Olson family currently resides in Arlington, Virginia.
