The Safety and Mission Success Review (SMSR)

The Safety and Mission Success Review (SMSR) is a NASA Headquarters-level, pre-decisional review held for the NASA Chief, Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) and the NASA Chief Engineer, to independently assess the readiness to proceed with selected human space flight and expendable launch vehicle launches, as well as selected experimental aerospace vehicle and commercial launches in accordance with NASA policies NPR 7120.5D and NPR 8705.6A. The SMSR provides the basis for the NASA Chief SMA and the NASA Chief Engineer, or their designee(s), to knowledgeably and confidently sign a Certification of Flight Readiness, or to issue a recommendation to the appropriate Mission Directorate Associate Administrator to proceed with the activity.”
