Located on the Concourse Level in CC70, the Fitness Center is open Monday through Friday, from 6:30am to 6:30pm, and is closed for cleaning every day from 9:00am-10:00am. The Fitness Center is also closed during all Federal holidays.
All NASA HQ civil servant employees are eligible to use The Fitness Center. Employees must obtain a medical clearance issued by the Health Unit before using The Fitness Center. To schedule a fitness clearance exam, call the Health Unit at 358-2600.
The Fitness Center offers a variety of cardiovascular and strength equipment. Some pieces of equipment focus on aerobic conditioning, such as treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers, stair steppers, upright bicycles, recumbent bicycles, and rowers. Several machines are available to tone and keep muscles strong, including the Smith machine, lat pull down, chest press, leg press, shoulder press, inner & outer thigh machine, and the Gravitron, among others.
In addition to numerous free weights and different benches, The Fitness Center has several stability balls, resistance tubing bands, jump ropes, medicine balls, abdominal crunch boards, boxing gear, and mats to provide an extra punch to any overall workout.
Heart rate monitors are available for indoor or outdoor exercise use. Each monitor has the capacity to display heart rate and program one’s target heart rate range for safe and effective exercise training.
There are male and female dressing rooms. Each dressing room is equipped with lockers, showers, changing areas, hair dryers, and a sauna. As an added convenience, contingent upon availability, regular members may receive their own lockers to store personal items and workout clothes. Soap is also available.
The Fitness Center is contractor managed and operated. It is staffed by professionals with degrees in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, or other health-related degrees, as well as nationally recognized training and teaching certifications.
The staff is prepared to handle unforeseen emergencies and safely monitor the facility. The staff is trained in CPR, first-aid, and the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). The facility has an accessible AED and first-aid kit, and the Health Unit is located next door. In the event of an emergency, the facility is equipped with strategically located duress buttons that connect directly to the Headquarters Health Unit and Security personnel.
The Fitness Center offers a comprehensive program dedicated to wellness and healthy living. Among the programs are:
Group Exercise Classes – cardiovascular and toning classes are offered 5 days a week, at lunchtime and occasionally in the afternoons. Classes are held in the multipurpose room on the Concourse Level, CG69. The group exercise program is one the most popular ways for members to stay fit. Class formats are varied to appeal to a range of preferences and workout goals, and change regularly to stay current. Some of the most dynamic and challenging classes include: Zumba, Pump it Up, Combination Training, Step, Abdominals, and Yoga.
Facility Orientations – participants are given a tour of the facility and instructions on proper and safe usage of the exercise equipment.
Fitness Assessments – all new and current members can take advantage of a baseline fitness test. The fitness assessment is a functional exam, which evaluates one’s current physical capacities. Measurements, such as body composition, blood pressure, strength, flexibility, endurance, and aerobic capacity, are used to establish and quantify your present level of fitness for the purpose of formulating an exercise program. It can also be used for comparative measures, to keep track of one’s own personal fitness progress over time.
Exercise Programs – A personalized workout can be designed just for a member, tailored to meet his/her specific fitness needs and goals. The staff is additionally available for personal training assistance, by appointment, during workouts.
Health Education – Wellness and healthy living is a large component of overall fitness. Each month, the center focuses on numerous health education topics, in the form of bulletin board information, pamphlets, brochures, newsletters, and handouts.
The staff creates outreach programs to extend beyond The Fitness Center as well. Examples of programs include the Great American Smoke-out “Kick the Stick” giveaways, fitness-related seminars, the annual Health Fair, and yoga classes.
Incentive Programs – Many different types of incentive programs are offered to motivate members and keep fitness fun! The staff creates unique contests, involving friendly competition, and awards certificates and prizes. A few of the noted programs have included: the Fitness Hollywood Squares game, Holiday Lift-A-Thon, Four Seasons Fitness Club, March Madness Exercise Extravaganza, and Exercise Across America.
