 2007 HealthierFeds Physical Activity Challenge

NASA is one of many federal agencies participating in the 2007 HealthierFeds Physical Activity Challenge organized by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The official OPM memorandum for the Challenge can be accessed at http://www.chcoc.gov/transmittal_detail.cfm?id=797.

The last HealthierFeds Physical Activity Challenge was during the fall of 2004, and NASA placed 6th overall out of 27 participating agencies.

The 2007 Challenge will take place from January 22 to April 1, and is open to all federal employees, contractors, family members, and retirees. To participate, you must register on the HealthierFeds Web site at http://healthierfeds.presidentschallenge.org. Participants will log their exercise (physical activity) time on the site, choosing from a variety of activities from walking to household tasks. To register, participants will create a log-in ID and password (at least 6 characters). When registering, enter the number 54605 for Group ID number to join the NASA Headquarters group. The final deadline for registration is February 20, 2007 .

The objective is to have all registrants complete at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, for a minimum of 5 days a week for the 6-week duration. The Challenge is designed to include everyone — from those who already practice an active lifestyle to those who are currently less active -- and lists a vast array of activities offering enough variety and flexibility to sustain interest and enthusiasm.

Many of us already meet the requirement, but for others, this would be a good opportunity to start the New Year with a commitment to maintaining a regular exercise routine. The Web site allows you to “back-log” your exercise within 2-week increments, just in case you forget to sign in regularly. The agency only receives credit for those who complete the challenge, rather than those who simply register.  In 2004, NASA had over 900 registrants, but only 17 percent completed the 6-week, 5-days-per-week, 30-minutes-a-day requirement. Help NASA move up in the ranks this year. All of the NASA Centers are participating, and the goal is for NASA Headquarters to lead the pack!

If you have any questions, or need help registering for the Challenge, please contact the Fitness Center staff at 358-0138.
