Medical Clearance For International Travel
Updated NASA international health travel requirements and State Department recommendations aimed at safeguarding a traveler's health, requires advance planning and coordination with the Headquarters Health Unit. Since it is the employee's responsibility to ensure he/she receives the necessary information and clearance prior to going on foreign travel, travelers are strongly advised to contact the Headquarters Health Unit (358-2600) at least 30 days prior to departure or as soon as the need for travel is known to assure timely medical clearance by a Headquarters Health Unit physician. Foreign travel will NOT be approved unless a traveler has a medical clearance from the Health Unit. Although a traveler may get a valid medical clearance from his/her private physician, it MUST be certified by the Health Unit. In addition current NASA protocol and policy mandate that all foreign travel must be submitted to the Office of External Relations for review and approval 30 calendar days prior to travel in order to obtain the NASA traveler's country clearance from the Department of State. For details check NPD 9710.1 NASA Supplement to Foreign Travel Regulations and NPR 1810.1 Health Services for International Travel or Assignment w/Change 3 (12/22/04).
