Collected here are all of the databases, catalogs, and electronic indexes used at the NASA Headquarters Library. If you need help finding information, please request a search. Registered Library Patrons can request demonstrations of how to use these databases, work-related research, and searches in specific librarian-mediated databases such as Dialog, Lexis-Nexis, STN, and Factiva.

ABYZ News Links - Catalog of links to newspapers, news media, and news sources arranged by country.

Aerospace Database (STN) - This database is one of the sources for searching AIAA and other aerospacee literature, 1962 to present. Registered library patrons can request a search. Limited to NASA HQ employees.

Air University Index to Military Periodicals (AULIMP) - Indexes significant articles from military and aeronautical periodicals from 1988 to present. No full-text, but includes links to some journal's websites.

Air University Research Web - Full-text of a couple thousand research papers submitted by Air University students.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Publications - searchable index of publications from 1934 to present. Full-text is not available.

American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Publications - Includes books, meeting papers, journal papers, and standards. Many can be puchased online.

ArXiv - A repository of electronic preprints in the hard sciences.

Astrophysics Data System (ADS)- Includes four sets of abstracts: 1) astronomy and astrophysics/planetary sciences/solar physics, containing 674,411 abstracts; 2) instrumentation, containing 605,446 abstracts; 3) physics and geophysics, containing 1,073,145 abstracts; and 4) Los Alamos preprint server, containing 3,902 abstracts. Also includes links to the full text of articles appearing in most of the major astronomical journals.

Balloon Technology Database - Index of over 2200 documents held at Wallops Flight Facility. A few are available in pdf.

Computational Sciences Division Papers and Publications Archive - searchable list of mostly full-text papers from Ames Research Center's Computational Sciences Division, 1998- present.

Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports - Open CRS - "A project of the Center for Democracy & Technology through the cooperation of several organizations and collectors of CRS Reports, Open CRS provides citizens access to CRS Reports already in the public domain.." As of 7/14/2005, 8485 reports are available.

Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) - source of the Recommendations (Blue Books) and Reports (Green Books).

Copernica - Gallery of works from the NASA Art Program. Includes works by Robert McCall, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Jamie Wyeth. The works depict a wide range of subjects, from Space Shuttle launches to aeronautics research, Hubble Space Telescope and even virtual reality.

Department of Defense Directives - DOD issuances, directives, instructions, regulations and manuals.

Department of Defense Specifications & Standards - Department of Defense Single Stock Point (DODSSP) for Military Specifications, Standards and Related Publications.

Department of Energy Information Bridge - Offers the full-text of many DOE publications from 1995 to the present.

Department of Transportation Documents - Offers the full-text of DOT dockets, and FAA Regulations, Advisory Circulars, and Airworthiness Directives.

Dialog - Offers more than 450 databases on ALL subjects. Covers magazines, newspapers, newsletters, Dun & Bradstreet reports, organization information, statistics, scientific journals, biographies, patents, directories, international publications, and market research. Registered library patrons can request a search. Limited to NASA HQ employees.

Discovery Program Library - Collection of online documents from the Headquarters Office of Space Science.

DoD Scientific and Technical Information Network - The public version of the Defense Technical Information Center's STINET database. NASA HQ employees may request searches in the limited database or request documents be purchased by contacting the Library.

Earth Observing System Special Publications and Reports - Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents, Handbooks, Plans, Brochures, and Earth Science Enterprise Presentations at Various Science Conferences.

EBSCOhost - A journal database indexing 1,400,000 articles. A few journals are available in full-text online. Articles from most other journals can be ordered through the database or requested from the Library. Limited to NASA HQ employees.

Electronic Preprints - Catalog of web sites offering electronic preprints of journal articles. Compiled by Goddard Space Flight Center Library.

EROS Data Center Image Gallery - A collection of satellite images that record events of historic significance, beautiful sights or images that stir the imagination. Look under Products for additional sources of Earth images.

European Science Foundation (ESF) - Collection of full-text policy briefings, infrastructure studies, reports and position papers by the Foundation, 1998-present.

FAA Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation - Collection of quarterly launch reports, forecasts, licensing, and COMSTAC reports.

FAA Documents - Office publications, reports, manuals, plans from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Factiva - Indexes full-text current newspapers, newswires, television transcripts, trade journals, and magazines. Also offers a variety of business reports. Registered library patrons can request a search. Limited to NASA HQ employees.

Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) - Offers the FAR in a variety of formats, plus supporting documentation.

Federal Information Processing Standards - Lists full-text Department of Commerce FIPS by number.

Federal Workers Lookup - Database of all civil servants (no contractors) in federal agencies across the U.S. Gives location, occupation, agency, grade, and amount of cash bonuses. Offered by the Washington Post. Compiled from OPM 2002 Personnel Data File.

Federation of American Scientists Space Policy Project - Collection of full-text space policy documents, a World Space Guide, military space documents, and related resources.

FindArticles.com - Looksmart's database of 5.5 million articles from 900 publications.

FirstGov - Specialized search engine that searches only United States government sites. The official gateway to all U.S. government information.

FirstSearch - Encompasses 38 databases on a wide variety of topics from education and life sciences to public affairs and technology. Includes Wordcat, a combined book catalog of other 30,000 libraries. The article databases often have full-text. To see which database indexes a journal, look up the journal title. Limited to NASA HQ employees.

Government Accountability Office - Full-text of GAO reports and testimony, listed by date, agency and topic.

Global Change Master Directory - Collection of earth science data sets arranged by topic. Maintained by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

Goddard TV Catalog - Offers detailed descriptions of Goddard Space Flight Center videos on earth science, space science, and technology. Includes ordering instructions. Some of the videos are online.

GPO Access - Includes the full-text of the Budget of the U.S. Government, Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, Code of Federal Regulations, bills, laws, hearings, reports, Congressional Record, Economic Indicators, Federal Register, GAO Comptroller General Decisions, US Code, Supreme Court Decisions, U.S. Government Manual, Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents, and Public Papers of the Presidents.

GrayLit Network - A science portal of technical reports. Search multiple databases at once, a product of the Department of Energy (DOE).

Great Images in NASA (GRIN) - Images of significant historical interest selected by the NASA History Office. Images are arranged by subject and NASA center and offered in a range of sizes.

Infomine: Internet resources collection - "INFOMINE is a virtual library of Internet resources relevent to faculty, staff, and research staff at the university level. It contains useful Internet resources such as databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library card catalogs, articles, directories of researchers and many other types of information."

Hubble Gallery - A database of Hubble images .

IEEE Xplore - Browse tables of contents and access Abstract records of IEEE transactions, journals, magazines, conference proceedings and standards. NASA HQ employees can request interlibrary of articles and conference papers by contacting the Library an interlibrary loan request.

Image Collections, Johnson Space Center - Links to many searchable NASA photography and video sites at JSC and a few other sources.

Image Gallery, Dryden Flight Research Center - This archive contains digitized images, movies, and drawings of many of the unique research aircraft flown from the 1940s to the present at what is now known as NASA Dryden Flight Research Center.

Image Gallery, Glenn Research Center - This collection is maintained by the GRC Public Affairs office and includes images of GRC's facilities, technology, aircraft, people and space flight operations support.

Ingenta - Free searching of 20,000 journals from 1988.

International Space Station Databases - includes Vehicle Master Database, Design Knowledge Capture Library, and Lessons Learned Database. Some databases require login and password. Others are open to the public.

International Space Station Operations Data Development & Integration - flight reports, system data books, and multi-segment operations review reports.

International Space University Publications - student and team project reports.

Internet Archive - Specialized search engine that searches an archive of old web pages.

Internet Public Library - Catalog of reputable sources selected by the University of Michigan School of Information.

ISI (Web of Knowledge and Web of Science) - "An index to the published literature of the most significant conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions in" science and technology, 1990 to present. Limited to NASA GSFC/HQ employees.Access courtesy of the Goddard Library.

ISS EarthKAM - A NASA sponsored program that allows students to take pictures of the Earth from a digital camera mounted on the ISS and on select Space Shuttle missions. Includes an image library of high quality photographs dating back to 1996.

Johnson Space Center Document Index System - indexes documents in the Johnson Scientific and Technical Information Center. Some of the documents are in full-text. Many are not in the NASA Aeronautics and Space Database.

JSC Oral History Project - Transcripts are online, plus a database of the audio recordings. Participants include managers, engineers, technicians, doctors, astronauts, and other employees of NASA and aerospace contractors who served in key roles during the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Shuttle programs.

Kennedy Space Center Archives Electronic Documents - Mercury thru Skylab presskits and program directives.

Langley Research Center Multimedia Repository - A searchable database of photos, images, and movies documenting NASA and NACA research at Langley Research Center.

Lessons Learned Information System (LLIS)

Lexis-Nexis - A full-text database with articles from major newspapers, trade journals, and newswires. Also an excellent source for legal and legislative information. Registered library patrons can request a search. Limited to NASA HQ employees.

Life Sciences Data Archive (LSDA) - Database of experiments, missions, biospecimens, flight hardware items, personnel, documents and images.

Lunar & Planetary Institute - full-text document, meeting abstracts, information bulletins, and image databases.

Mars Exploration Program Image Gallery - An indexed source of many Mars photographs taken by NASA spacecraft; including, the Viking Landers, Mars Pathfinder, Mars Odyssey, the Mars Global Surveyor and the Mars Exploration Rovers.

Medline/PubMed - A service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 11 million citations from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. To search only space life sciences click on Limits and under Subsets select Space Life Sciences.

Multimedia Gallery, Kennedy Space Center - Includes photographs, videos and posters. Information on purchasing hard copies is located at the bottom of the page.

Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST) - database of data and images from Hubble and other astronomical missions maintained by the Space Telescope Science Institute.

NASA Aeronautics and Space Database - There are two versions of NASA ASD: one is open to everyone on a nasa.gov computer. The other includes limited documents and requries a password. Both databases include documents from NASA and related agencies, meeting papers, journal articles, and videos. NASA Headquarters employees can contact the Library or CASI for help in using this database.

NASA CORE (Central Operation of Resources for Teachers) - NASA CORE is a worldwide distribution center for NASA multimedia educational materials. For a nominal fee, CORE will provide educators with materials through its mail order service. CORE is jointly sponsored by NASA and the Lorain County Joint Vocational School in Oberlin, Ohio.

NASA DTRS - the NASA Dryden Technical Report Server is not included in the NASA Technical Report Server. It should be searched in addition to the NTRS.

NASA Goddard Radiation Effects & Analysis - Test reports, presentations, papers & documents, and a searchable publication database.

NASA GTRS - the NASA Glenn Technical Report Server is not included in the NASA Technical Report Server. It should be searched in addition to the NTRS.

NASA Headquarters Office of Safety and Mission Assurance Documents - directives, standards, plans, reference documents, and office work instructions.

NASA History Books - Full-text NASA Special Publications, Historical Reports, Monographs in Aerospace History, and other space history documents posted by the NASA Headquarters History Office.

NASA IT Technical Standards - NASA standards in the 2800 series.

NASA Legacy - Index of historical NASA and NACA aeronautics reports on CD-ROM. Some of the reports are in full-text. This database is accessible on the Jupiter workstation in the Library.

NASA MSFC Integrated Document Library - MTRS, MSFC directives, documentation repository, and project documents.

NASA Office of Inspector General (OIG) - full-text reports, audits, memoranda, testimony, etc.

NASA Office of Legislative Affairs - congressional hearings and testimony relevant to NASA and NASA's mission.

NASA Office of Logic Design - Full-text NASA reports on digital engineering and programmable technology.

NASA Online Directives Information System (NODIS) - Full-text NASA Policy Directives (NPDs), Policy Charters (NPCs), and Procedures and Guidelines (NPGs), formerly known as NHBs and NMIs.

NASA Procurement Reference Library - NASA FAR Supplement, Grant and Cooperative Agreement Handbook, and guidance for submitting unsolicited proposals.

NASA Software (COSMIC) - a collection of software created by NASA in a wide range of disciplines including engineering, chemistry, aerodynamics, and other areas. The software is now offered for sale on the website.

NASA Standards - NASA standards and NASA preferred standards including everything from AIAA and DOD to ISO and SAE. Also includes NASA handbooks. Many documents are available in full-text or can be requested by NASA employees. Open to the public with registration.

NASA Tech Briefs - Index of NASA Tech Briefs articles from 1998-present and technical support packages (TSPs) from 2000 to present.

NASA TechFinder - Source for technology profiles, technology opportunity sheets, software technologies and success stories.

NASA Technical Report Server - The NTRS is a publicly accessible subset of the NASA Aeronautics and Space Database. Members of the public should use it to identify NASA reports and books. Some materials are available in full-text. To be complete you should also search the Glenn Technical Report Server and the Dryden Technical Report Server.

NASA/DOD Interagency Agreements - full-text of NASA and Department of Defense agreements from 1959 to present. Arranged by DoD and NASA organization name. NASA access only.

National Academy Press - full-text books from the Academies and the National Research Council. For print copies of NASA-related texts, check the library catalog.

National Research Council Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board Reports - full-text of the Board's reports, 1997 to present.

National Research Council Board on Physics and Astronomy - full-text of the board's reports from 1998 to present.

National Research Council Space Studies Board - full-text of many of the board's reports, 1980s to the present.

National Science Foundation - full-text documents from 1996 to present. Includes statistical reports on science and engineering research, funding, and education.

National Space Science Data Center, Goddard Space Flight Center - Images, CD- ROMs, videos, and data sets.

National Technical Information Service - searches NTIS reports from 1990 to present. Many documents available in full-text. For reports before 1964 to present, registered library patrons can request a search. in the Dialog NTIS database.

NIX (NASA Image eXchange) - Web-based search engine for simultaneously searching one or more of NASA's online image and photo collections. NIX searches databases of over 442,000 NASA images and links to another 250,000 images via the "Additional NASA Imagery" button.

Office of Science & Technology Policy - recent reports from the office. To see older reports, check the archive.

Office of Technology Assessment - All of the OTA's reports in full- text archived at Princeton. Print copies of many of the reports are available in the library catalog.

Planetary Data System, Jet Propulsion Lab - Images, data sets, and animations.

Planetary Exploration Library - List of full-text documents focusing on Apollo and human spaceflight to Mars. Also has some images of Mars and the Moon.

Rand Books and Publications - search publications 1946 to present. Some are available free online.

Science Research Portal - A free, publically available web portal which searches thousands of high quality science journals and databases at one time. Still in Beta version, by the end of 2005 scienceresearch.com hopes to offer advanced features like subject alerts and personal libraries for a nominal fee.

Small Business Innovation Research/Technology Transfer Phase 1 Abstract Archives - a searchable database of SBIR technology proposals.

Software Guidebooks and Standards - NASA guidebooks, standards, and directives for developing software.

Space Future Papers & Publications - collection of conference papers and published articles on every aspect of space exploration. Many are available in full-text.

Space Shuttle Documents (JSC) - Includes Payload Integration Library System, NSTS 07700 Documents, Program Documentation Center, Shuttle/Payload Interface Control Documents, Intermediate Depot Maintenance Requirements Documents, OMRS Documents, Vehicle Configuration Data Book, and more.

Video Catalog, Jet Propulsion Lab - These videos are produced in support of JPL missions and programs in space science, Earth science and technology development. Copies are available for purchase.

Video Repository, Johnson Space Center - Search by subject or scene list or browse by series title. Includes ordering information.

Virtual Technical Reports Center - lists institutions that offer full-text technical reports or searchable abstracts on the web (University of Maryland Libraries).

Visualization of Remote Sensing Data (VRSD) - The visualizations are derived from satellite data which has been color-enhanced or otherwise processed to yield high-impact renderings of hurricanes and other natural phenomena. Because of this processing, these images should be viewed more as works of art than as raw data suitable for quantitative analysis. VRSD is an outgrowth of a past NASA program, Public Use of Remote Sensing Data (RSD).

Goddard Project Directory - Web sites, information, links and photos for Goddard missions, projects, spacecraft and instruments.

Office of Management and Budget - OMB circulars, memoranda and reports.

Space Science Education Resource Directory - Catalog designed for educators seeking NASA's space science educational resources. It will help you locate Internet-based resources, such as Web pages, PDFs, videos, and CD-ROMs. Includes ordering information.
