The Aerospace Industry

Revised: March 2011

The aerospace industry was born more than one hundred years ago, when the internal combustion engine was joined to the balloon and the glider. America's contribution to it is vast, ranging from the first airplane and the first modern rocket to the latest in avionics. NACA, succeeded by NASA, has been present for all but the first few decades of this grand drama. This webpage covers the past and present of the aerospace industry, especially in America. You may also find items of interest in our webpages on Space Commercialization and Space Tourism, Human Capital Management in the Technical Fields, Legislative Research and Space Law, and the NASA History Office.

All items are available at the Headquarters Library, except as noted. NASA Headquarters employees and contractors: Call x0168 or email Library@hq.nasa.gov for information on borrowing or in-library use of any of these items. Members of the public: Contact your local library for the availability of these items. NASA Headquarters employees can request additional materials or research on this topic. The Library welcomes your comments or suggestions about this webpage.
