The notion of quality management has a centuries-old legacy, going back to the mediaeval artisans' guilds, which censured their members if they produced shoddy goods. Today, this ancient practice has gone beyond examining the condition of shoes at a town fair, to scrutinizing the processes and practices of firms and agencies. Quality management can help NASA run efficiently by removing organizational roadblocks and ensuring the safety and functionality of its manned and unmanned spacecraft and aircraft. More importantly, quality management can help NASA improve its relationship with its "customers", the American people.
