Borrowing

NASA Headquarters Library Patrons can borrow books, videos, and tapes from the library (see Become A Patron). Library patrons can request books by calling the library (202-358-0168), visiting the library, or sending an email. At your request we will pull books from the shelves and have them ready for you at the front desk.

Most books and foreign language audiocassettes circulate for 30 days. Audiovisual materials, except for the foreign language tapes, circulate for 14 days.

Headquarters employees can have a maximum of 30 items charged at any time.

Contractors and NASA employees on detail at Headquarters an have a maximum of 15 items charged at any time.

Patrons are always responsible for the materials they have checked out of the library. If a patron gives something he or she has checked out of the library to another HQ library patron, the library should be notified in writing. Do not loan HQ library materials to a non-HQ library patron.

Books at other NASA Center libraries or found in bookstores, WorldCat, other libraries, or any other source can be borrowed through interlibrary loan.

Researchers who are not NASA Headquarters Library patrons can borrow books found in our library through their local library's interlibrary loan department.

Buying

The Headquarters Library does not buy personal copies of books for NASA Headquarters employees. These should be sought through office managers. The only exception are NASA documents published as books (see Documents). However, we strongly encourage purchase suggestions for the library. If you request a book that is purchased, you will be notified when it arrives and it will be held for you. Also, please consider using interlibrary loan as a more economical way to obtain the books you need.

NASA produced books can be found in the NASA Aeronautics and Space Database, the NASA Technical Report Server and on the History Office and NASA Headquarters Information Center websites. They can be purchased from the NASA Headquarters Information Center, the NASA Scientific and Technical Information (STI) Program, and the Government Printing Office.

Articles

You can submit the request as part of a search request or as a list of titles. Library staff will obtain the articles using online databases, the web, the library's print collection, interlibrary loan, and document vendors. Researchers who are not NASA Headquarters Library patrons are welcome to visit the library and photocopy any articles in the collection.

Interlibrary Loan

The Headquarters Library borrows materials from other libraries for registered library patrons. Books, documents, articles, conference papers, videos, books-on-tape, books-on-cd, even microfilm and microfiche can be obtained through interlibrary loan. Registered patrons can submit interlibrary loan requests by calling the library (202-358-0168), visiting the library, sending an email, or submitting a NHQ Form 213. Please indicate when you need the materials and the format you prefer.

Normal turn around time is 1-2 weeks but we can sometimes rush materials in a day or less. Patrons will be called or emailed when their materials arrive. Borrowing periods and due dates are set by the lending library. Please contact the Headquarters Library before the due date to renew your materials.

The NASA Headquarters Library also loans materials in its collection to other libraries in the United States. This is the one method whereby researchers who are not patrons can borrow materials. Please contact your local library's interlibrary loan department to submit a request for materials found in our collection.
