MAILMAN E-MAIL LIST SERVICE

Mailman LogoMailman List

Mailman is a mailing list management application which allows list owners to manage their lists directly through the use of a Web interface.  It supports a wide range of types of mailing lists, such as general discussion lists and announcement-only lists and has extensive privacy control features.

Mailman list owners may control many aspects of how the list operates, and configure it directly using the Mailman interface.  For example, list owners can add and delete mailing list members themselves, without having to submit a request to the Enterprise Service Desk (ESD) to make those changes.  List owners can specify whether or not to review messages before they are sent to the entire list, and can control whether to review or automatically grant requests to join the list.

Unlike NOMAD Global Distribution Lists, Mailman lists accommodate external addresses (i.e., are not restricted to ‘nasa.gov’ addresses) and can accommodate an unlimited number of recipients.

LIST MANAGEMENT

Request a New List

Any NASA Headquarters employee (civil service or support service contractor) may request a mailing list by submitting a request in the NASA Account Management System (NAMS) within the Identity Management and Account Exchange (IdMAX).

Include the following information:

  • Name of the list (see Mailman List Management for details about naming conventions)
  • Name of list owner
  • Business justification (purpose of list)
  • Audience

You will have an opportunity to identify your e-mail subscribers later.

After your list has been created, you will receive immediate e-mail notification from mailman-owner@hq.nasa.gov.  This message will contain login instructions and your password.

Add or Delete People

Mailman allows a list manager to add and delete people from their mail list. See Mailman List Management for step-by-step instructions.

Delete Lists

The process for deleting lists is different depending on whether you wish to delete only one of your lists or all your lists. See Mailman List Management for step-by-step instructions.

Change Ownership

It is important to manage list ownership when owners change. Request "changes" to a list by submitting a request in NAMS within the IdMAX system. Once the list owner’s information is taken out of the system (owner is deleted), there is no way to determine mail list ownership or organization. See Mailman List Management for step-by-step instructions.
