RSA SECURID TOKEN

Imge of SecurID tokenTokens are used primarily for accessing "token-only login" applications.  While once used for remote access, the Personal Identification Verification (PIV) smartcard is now the primary method for accessing the NASA network remotely.

As part of a strategic objective to enhance PIV smartcard usage, the Information Technology and Communications Division (ITCD) is continuing the effort to reduce the number of SecurID Tokens at NASA HQ in phases.

Exception Categories: Tokens may still be required for accessing:

  • Certain applications and Web sites configured for “token only” authentication
  • NASA IT resources by users who do not have a PIV smartcard and work for NASA less than 180 days

If you fall into one of the exception categories (i.e., have a technical need to retain your token), you must submit a waiver request with a valid business justification. If approved, you will be allowed to retain and use your token until such exception has been resolved and the token is no longer required. Once your exception categories are resolved, you will be required to submit a new waiver or turn in your token.

Visit the HQ Token Reduction Project Web page to learn more.

Obtaining a New Token
If you need a new token, follow the steps that correspond to your situation:

Situation

Process

New token needed

To order a new token for an employee, submit an NAMS request.

Token already expired

Once you have verified that your token is past the expiration date, submit an NAMS request for a new token -- Agency RSA SecurID Token (new version) -- using the keyword “Agency RSA.” Bring the expired token with you when you pick up the replacement token.

Lost / Stolen / Damaged token

  1. To begin the process of replacing your lost/stolen/damaged token, contact the Enterprise Service Desk (ESD) and provide details. The ESD will open a ticket with the Security Operations Center (SOC) if the token is lost or stolen.
  2. Resubmit an NAMS request to modify the existing. Once approved and provisioned, you will receive an e-mail with further instructions.
  3. Complete NASA Electronic Form (NF) NHQ Form 598 per the instructions on your e-mail notification | Bring the completed form to the Loaner Pool in Room 4J65.
