Get Ready for Smartcards at HQ!

All Windows Users

September 30, 2009

Currently, to login to your desktop or laptop computer, you enter your Agency User ID and a 12-character password.  Soon, you will have the option of using your smartcard (NASA badge) to login. Smartcards are easy to use and secure. Once your computer has been smartcard-enabled, you will just insert your smartcard into the smartcard reader and enter your PIN, the 6-8 digit code you selected when you first received your current NASA badge.

There will be a Smartcard PIN Reset Event in the West Lobby Wednesday, September 30, 2009 through Wednesday, October 7, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.   The HQ Security Office will be available to verify that your badge/smartcard is ready for this new functionality and to reset your PIN if necessary. Be prepared with a 6-8 digit code that you can easily remember. Using any part of your Social Security Number is not permitted.

A Phased Migration

Smartcard functionality will be enabled for Windows users in a phased migration of about 300 users per week. You will receive an IT Notice in advance of your migration date.

In most cases, no action is required on your part to receive the necessary software to enable smartcard use, nor is a desk-side visit needed. However, a few computers may require special attention, in which case users will be contacted with further information.

Migrations of Windows computers will begin on Monday, October 19 and end by Friday, December 11.  A smartcard reader and software for Macintosh computers is in work, but no estimate is available yet as to when it will be ready.

After migration, you will still be able to login with your Agency User ID and password if you so choose.  You must continue to change your desktop login password every 60 days, as before, so that this login method remains viable.

A User Guide, Smartcard Fact Sheet, and Frequently Asked Questions document are available on the Smartcard@HQ Informational Web page. For still more information and photos of smartcards in action, visit the NASA CIO’s Smartcard Web site.

Should you need assistance, call the Enterprise Service Desk (ESD) at 358-HELP (4357) or 1-866-4NASAHQ (462-7247) or send an e-mail.
