REMOTE ACCESS SERVICES

Remote Access to Agency and HQ Resources

Many NASA applications and Web sites require you to be connected to the NASA HQ network to gain access. A government-approved computer is required when connecting to the NASA network. This computer is updated regularly with security patches and virus protection. Also, this computer is already configured to connect to NASA and Internet resources through a secure VPN connection.

Remote Access Options

  • Microsoft Outlook for e-mail and calendar
(must be connected to the Internet - VPN is not required)
  • Outlook Web Access (OWA) (Webmail)
(must be connected to the Internet - VPN is not required)
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN)
(for connecting to the NASA network)

SecurID Token

ITCD is currently migrating IT services, applications, and IT accounts to PIV authentication. The HQ applications that still use RSA SecurID token authentication are in the process of being converted to utilize Launchpad; thus making them compliant with PIV authentication. Once these steps are completed, HQ will decommission use of and support for the RSA SecurID token service.

Exception Categories

Tokens may still be required for accessing:

  • Remote VPN connectivity on some ACES-managed Macintosh computers
  • Certain applications and Web sites configured for “Token Only” authentication
  • NASA IT resources by users who do not have a PIV smartcard

If you fall into one of the exception categories (i.e., have a technical need to retain your token), you must submit a waiver request with a valid business justification. If approved, you will be allowed to retain and use your token until such exception has been resolved and the token is no longer required. Once your exception category is resolved, you will be required to turn in your token. If you still have a need for a token, you will be required to submit a new waiver request.

Visit the HQ Token Reduction Project Web page to learn more.

Government-Approved Computer

IMPORTANT! Only government-issued and government-approved computers (laptops/desktops/tablets) are to be used to access, process, and store NASA data. All HQ employees and contractors are required to comply with this updated direction in order to protect NASA data, IT assets, and services.

Personal computers (laptops/desktops/tablets) cannot be used to access IT resources at NASA HQ or through the HQ VPN. Contractor-owned and Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) computers provided to contactors that have a NASA-approved IT security plan with a current authorization to operate are considered to be government-approved computers.
