ONE NASA PHOTO-ID (PIV-II)

NASA Centers and component facilities are on schedule to achieve 95 percent issuance of the new Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD) 12 badge by October 1, 2008. As NASA Centers and component facilities near completion of the re-badging effort, it is essential to retire the old NPIDB so that the Agency may ensure proper credentialing of the NASA civil servant workforce.

Therefore, effective November 1, 2008, the "gold" NPIDB for civil servants, that became mandatory in October 2006, shall no longer be accepted for identification purposes within the Agency. NASA Centers and component facilities shall take possession of all of the "gold" NPIDBs as those badges are no longer required for physical access control purposes. As of November 1, 2008, the new HSPD-12 badge will be the only photo identification badge civil servants may use for "flash-pass" access to NASA Centers and facilities.

All personnel at NASA Headquarters who have not yet enrolled for their new One NASA Photo-ID, PIV-II (Personnel Identity Verification II) are urged to do so as soon as possible to comply with HSPD-12 and to prevent any interruptions in their access to the building.  Be aware that once you have enrolled it will take a few weeks for your One NASA Photo-ID to arrive at Headquarters and be issued to you, so the sooner the better.  Those who have not enrolled have been notified by email of what they must do to comply and are running out of time.

Civil Servants who have not received a PIV-II badge by November 1, 2008, or loose their current PIV-II badge, will be issued temporary HQ badges until their new PIV-II badge arrives.  The temporary badge will not be accepted at other centers.

As we near completion of issuance of the One NASA Photo-ID NASA Headquarters will be activating the turnstiles in the East and West Lobbies.  The final stages of work on the turnstiles is anticipated for the second week of August and at that time an activation date will be announced for the turnstiles to be turned on, most likely at the end of August, beginning of September.

Their activation will make a difference in your entry/exit as you will have to wait a fraction of a second for the paddles to separate and allow you to pass through (just like on the Metro).  With the announcement of the start date will be instructions as to how they will work; e.g. you must touch your card to the reader on the right side and only one person may pass through at a time, etc.  Please pay attention to the announcements and prepare yourself for the change in your routine.

It is anticipated that the West Lobby turnstiles will be directionally programmed for high volume during “rush hour” entry/exit as you are already used to with commuting on the Metro.

As always, if there are any problems at the turnstiles, the Security Officers will be there to assist you and can remotely open the paddles when necessary.
