- NASA's initiatives to detect, deter, and neutralize espionage, other intelligence activities, or sabotage conducted for or on behalf of foreign powers, organizations or persons, or international terrorist activities. The Division is also responsible for providing and promoting training, awareness, and outreach to the NASA community to educate and sensitize them to CI issues and concerns. The SD also provides and support analysis of specific CI threat information and foreign intelligence collection efforts to NASA program and project management.
- As an Agency central service, the SD also conducts sensitive investigations, approves and controls counterintelligence investigations at the NASA Centers, and collaborates with external Government agencies during all CI investigation activity, as necessary. The SD provides advice and assistance on the hiring of CI personnel and provides input (as appropriate) to the performance appraisals of Center CI personnel. The SD collaborates with the NASA OIG, when appropriate, to facilitate sharing CI and intelligence threat information concerning NASA IT networks.
- Providing Agency central service for the operation of the Sensitive Compartmented Information program and for the security management of NASA Special Access Programs.
- Maintains liaison with counterparts in other government agencies and industries; ensures coordination of security and programmatic CI activities involving computer networks with the NASA Office of Inspector General (OIG); ensures policy and operational coordination with the Office of the Chief Information Officer. The Assistant Administrator also serves as a member and the Executive Secretary of the NASA Security Council.
