[273] Since man first began to fly, he has striven to go faster. His progress . in pushing speed records upwards was followed by an upward trend for commercial aircraft (fig. 61). As speed of aircraft increases, so does drag-the frictional resistance on its surfaces. It follows that higher speeds require higher thrust to overcome drag (fig. 62).
