Ulli writes: "The lunar geology hammer used on the Moon during the Apollo 12 mission played and stills plays a big role in Al Bean's life."

"The hammer was used to plant the US flag, to try a 'skillful' fix on the already broken TV camera and, most importantly, helped to save the scientific part of the mission. To bring the ALSEP alive, it was essential to get the fuel element out of its casket and put it the RTG. But the fuel element did not come out of the cask - 'til Pete used the hammer."

"During his post-Apollo career as an artist, Al has used this very special hammer to create the typical surface texture of his paintings."
