"Zero Phase"

Pete was standing with his back to the Sun, facing the 'down-Sun' or Zero-Phase direction.  With the Sun 7.7 degrees above the eastern horizon, Pete's shadow is about 15 meters long.

The area beyond the tip of Pete's shadow is bright and looks washed-up.  Reflections off the small, broken fragments of rock that make up the surface layer are particularly strong directly back toward the Sun, making the surface at Zero Phase particularly bright.  In addition, any rock farther away than the tip of Pete's shadow will hide its own shadow.  The two effects make it all but impossible to see detail at Zero Phase.
